My research is in condensed matter theory and in materials theory (including computational modeling and dynamic simulations). In condensed matter theory, the focus of my research is on the magnetic, electronic, and crystallographic behavior of rare-earth and actinide systems involving f-electron effects, with my main current interest being in magnetic ordering and associated properties of correlated-electron systems. In materials theory and computational modeling, we are investigating the thermo-mechanical properties, phase separation, and interfacial behavior of structural and magnetic metallic systems and the defect structures in wide band gap semiconductors. Our predictive modeling either directly uses ab initio electronic structure calculations or uses atomistic classical potentials based on such ab initio total energy calculations in large-scale atomistic modeling using both molecular dynamics and probabilistic (monte carlo) techniques. We are investigating behavior such as surface reconstruction, additive and vacancy distributions and associated lattice relaxation, and precipitate and microstructure formation effects on structural materials systems, and imperfect interfacing effects on magnetic multilayer systems.
