In recent years, I have shifted my research interests from magnetoelastic and phonon lattice vibrations using ultrasonics and inelastic neutron scattering to physics education in teacher preparation and in the high school physics curriculum. My professional career began as a high school physics and mathematics teacher; I am dedicating the remaining years of my university career to the betterment of content and pedagogy for the high school physics teacher.
My present work revolves around changes in the teacher-preparation program for all science teachers with a particular emphasis on the integration of pedagogy and content. I have served as Associate Director of the University-wide Benedum project to revise teacher education and I work individually with each student planning a career in physics teaching.
Nationally I was Associate Director of the Mechanical Universe High School Adaptation, an NSF-funded project, and helped to develop and disseminate the films and materials for that program. I also taught TV and telecourses using that film series.
Currently I am Associate Director of C3P, the Comprehensive Conceptual Curriculum for Physics, an NSF-funded project to integrate the best-of-the-best educationally tested materials into a conceptual curriculum for use by teachers with all high school students at three levels. This curriculum will be available on a CD-ROM which will have film clips, simulation software, and other resources to guide the teachers and students through learning cycles based on learning outcomes of the concepts. This project will include dissemination through.
