The MR2022 Workshop

Welcome to the MR2022 Workshop website! It is exciting to announce the return in 2022 of this fantastic workshop series begun in 1998 as the "Workshop on Physics of Magnetic Reconnection and Dynamos" or the "US-Japan Workshop on Dynamo Phenomena and Self-Organization", and continued as the “US-Japan Workshop on Magnetic Reconnection". The 2022 meeting will be extra special, as it is being held in honor of milestone birthdays of two members of the community - the 75th birthday of Jim Drake from the University of Maryland, College Park, and the 80th birthday of Masaaki Yamada from Princeton University.

The 2022 workshop seeks to discuss the following areas:

General reconnection physics (theoretical and numerical studies; reconnection as an aspect of other phenomena such as magnetized turbulence and shocks)
Solar magnetic reconnection (solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and other solar transients; coronal heating; chromospheric reconnection; etc.)
Magnetic reconnection in the solar wind
Magnetic reconnection in the magnetospheres of Earth and other planets (magnetotail; magnetopause; bow shock; storms and substorms; etc.)
Magnetic reconnection in astrophysical systems (stars; accretion disks; protostars; active galactic nuclei (AGN) jets; galaxy clusters; pulsar wind; etc.)
Magnetic reconnections in laboratory experiments (merging; sawtooth crash in tokamaks; Taylor relaxation; high energy density plasmas; etc.)

The meeting will take place in beautiful Monterey, California, from May 16-20, 2022 (with a reception on the evening of May 15). The workshop site is the Portola Hotel & Spa. The meeting is intended to be in-person only, without a remote component. Please check back at this website for updates.
