Q&A with Lylah

  • What are your favorite things about the department?
    • Being surrounded by people who are just as curious about things as I am.
  • What do you think is the most interesting thing about your research?
    • I really enjoy that my work blends both fieldwork and lab work. I get to collect tree cores in the field and then analyze them in the lab. The weighing helps me determine wood density, which is important for understanding tree growth and estimating how much carbon forests store.
  • Why did you want to pursue physics?
    • I pursued physics because I'm interested in both physics and climate science, and studying both lets me understand how environmental systems work at a deeper level.
  • Why did you choose West Virginia University?
    • For financial reasons; WVU is very generous when it comes to scholarships and grants.
  • How have your professors and/or staff helped you be successful?
    • My professors have helped me realize that getting into research isn't as daunting as it seems.
  • What advice would you give to an incoming student?
    • Don't be afraid to reach out to professors for new opportunities. They are here to help you succeed.
