Alexandra Abova-Volkova

Graduate Student

Plasma & Space Physics

I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Physics, with a focus on space plasma physics. I graduated from Florida Institute of Technology in 2020 with a B.S. in Astronomy and Astrophysics and a minor in Computational Mathematics.

My research focuses on heating in asymmetric magnetic reconnection. I employ numerical and mathematical tools to design and perform particle-in-cell simulations and analyze data in order to achieve a better understanding of reconnection. My current project, "The effect of asymmetries on heating and its mechanisms in magnetic reconnection", is funded by a NASA FINESST grant.

While my current focus and primary interest are in magnetic reconnection, I am open to new projects and expanding my skillset within the space plasma physics umbrella.

Research Interests:
Asymmetric magnetic reconnection; Dayside magnetopause; Heating in reconnection; Magnetic reconnection energetics
