Q&A with Makesi

  • What are your favorite things about the department?
    • Everyone is genuinely so friendly! No matter where you turn to in the department, you are greeted with a smile and some good company.
  • What do you think is the most interesting thing about your research?
    • Even though I am not very far into my research yet as a first-year, I really appreciate the fact that I get a chance to develop more hands-on skills. It’s a trait that’s a little out of my comfort zone right now, but I’m hoping it becomes second nature with enough practice.
  • Why did you want to pursue physics?
    • Growing up, I always liked natural sciences, but I have always had an innate curiosity to understand how our universe just seems to work so perfectly. Plasma physics in particular excites me because there is still so much to learn about the dynamics of this state of matter
  • Why did you choose West Virginia University?
    • WVU was actually recommended to me by my academic advisor from my alma mater. I told him about my research interests in magnetic reconnection and this institution seemed like a natural fit..
  • How have your professors and/or staff helped you be successful?
    • The professors here in WVU really emphasize conceptual understanding first even if it sacrifices the flow of their lecture. As for my research group, they have been very respectful of my time and always offer prudent advice towards making me feel better adjusted to the work environment.
  • What advice would you give to an incoming student?
    • Three C's. Be curious, be consistent, and be careful of how you manage your time.
